There is something extraordinary in the spontaneity and determination of people of Maranhão.
For almost two decades, my husband and research partner, Meredith W. Watts, and I research, interview, and document popular and folk culture in the Northeastern state of Maranhão.
RESEARCH PAPERS
We have presented more than two dozen conference papers, have shared our work on numerous seminars and workshops. Most recently we completed a manuscript on the Leadership of Women in the Popular Culture of Maranhão.
PODCAST SERIES
A new series of podcasts on the Power of the Feminine in the Popular Culture of Maranhão features the power of women leaders in Maranhão. It is a research project on traditional communities and African ancestry – the position of women and the feminine in African-based religiosities and popular culture in Maranhão. It was initiated with support by the Fulbright Foundation and is currently being expanded to an estimated 65 oral histories.
